The WALS Foundation, a sister organization, is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation. Formed in 2004 for the purpose of educational outreach, it is also located in the First State Capitol of the state of West Virginia. The mission of The WALS Foundation is to offer educational programming on issues of public concern not otherwise covered in-depth.

In 2004, we began the mock trial program in Ohio County schools and in 2012, including outreach in ten additional West Virginia counties, celebrated over 10,000 participating students.

It was customary to go into 4th and 8th grade classrooms, but in 2009 we made the program available for the 5th grade students instead of 4th grade students when it was brought to our attention that the West Virginia Department of Education states in their 21st Century Social Studies Standards and Objectives that 5th grade students should “participate in a mock trial.”

In the 2012/2013 school year, all 5th grade students in the RESA 6 area of Brooke, Hancock, Ohio, Marshall and Wetzel counties will participate in a pilot program. Our goal is to have all 22,000+ West Virginia 5th grade students experience and enjoy the mock trial program in 2013/14.
